Getting a job in ecology can be tough, but NEON arguably has been hiring more ecologists than anyplace else: Earlier this year its workforce topped some 400 permanent and 100 summer employees. Science: Current Issue In 2004, a collision with a ship cut short the life of an endangered North Atlantic right whale named Stumpy. Many lamented her death, but Stumpy's demise could ultimately help other whales. Researchers are using her tough, hairlike baleen to develop a new method of reconstructing a whale's life story—much as scientists use growth rings to reveal a tree's past. The nascent technique could make it easier to study, and perhaps protect, whales. Deriving whale biographies from baleen is just one concept to be discussed next week at the 21st Biennial Conference on the Biology of Marine Mammals in San Francisco, California. Some 3000 researchers will share insights into some of the world's most charismatic creatures, including first-time audio recordings of rare species and updates on struggling populations. India to Establish Gravitational Research Lab, Says Prime Minister Modi

India has decided to establish a Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) where gravitational waves can be studied, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Sunday. In his monthly radio programme Mann ki Baat, Modi said Indian scientists were also in the research team that studied gravitational waves. The laboratory will be third of its kind in the world after Hanford in Washington and Livingston in Louisiana, both in the US. "Recently the Gravitational Waves have been discovered by the scientific community of the world, which is indeed a major achievement. We should be proud of the fact that Indian scientists were also part of it. Keeping this in mind, we have taken a decision to open a LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory) in India," said Modi.
